Category Description:
Clermont Steel is a real prototype on the Peavine, located at the west end of Afton near Summit Road. The highway entrance to the facility is off old State Route 32. This is a cool and fun industry to model because of what they make. They make roller coaster sections. YAH! For real, roller coasters. What a fun thing to model on a layout without employing unrealistic artistic license or fantasy.

The real siding at Clermont Steel was actually served by eastbound trains, and made a 180 degree loop around the south side of the complex to the siding on the west side of the building. The side of the building you see on the layout is the east side. Switching the direction of the switch and placing the siding on the near side were necessetated by the shelf type design. It also benefits me during operation as the train being switched remains on the flat shelf instead of the hill down to the lower level.

This scene was also the inspriation for the backdrops I'm using. The model is just a bunch of Rix engine house pieces, secured with tape and stood up against a piece of scrap 2x4 (I should know better than to give away my secrets). There is no back ot the building, and the entire scene only lasted for a few days. The surface was painted gatorboard (which I now know warps when painted) covered with ballest for a gravel lot. Figures, vehicles and other materials were places around the lot to complete the scene.

After scaling the picture and test printing on plain paper, I had a poster board printed of this and other scenes. Carefully cutting away the sky, I rubber cemented the poster to the backdrop. I use the same technique on other backdrops, but this was the first.
